Green America has programs to promote environmental preservation and on the improvement of human rights, in the areas of food, finance, labor, and climate.
With this day 2 action step I rejoined the local 350 org, made a small donation to the national 350 org, and confirmed my membership with the local Sierra Club chapter. Thanks for the nudge! Writing letters is an easy way for me to take action.
We started our own local grassroots group just before the pandemic started and It was still in the white house. Joining together and talking about the issues that frightened us was really helpful for each of us I think. Then, during the pandemic and the zoom world, we started being more strategic and have tried to partner with some of these national groups on local actions that make a bigger local impact. It's been great although I keep wanting to be able to do more and belong to more groups. Cutting it back is, indeed, the hardest part now.
Thank you for sharing this. Bravo to you and your group. Yesterday, I mentioned Katharine Hayhoe's book and your comment reminded me of a quote she includes near the end from the founder of Citizen's Climate Lobby: "I used to think that the important people were taking care of the important problems. I don't think that anymore." She goes on to explain that ordinary people are our best hope.
I feel that it definitely takes a group of "common" people to make the "important" powers that be take the necessary action. The things that I had fought for during the last decade in our small town were so easy to accomplish when we had our whole group sending in emails and attending city council meetings in support of an action.
I am a member of 360 and the local chapter of Sierra. I also joined 4 local organizations that are involved in Climate Action in the state/county I live in which has been very helpful.
Anne Marie, this action series has been so helpful! Thank you for taking the time to put together such clear and concrete ways for people to get involved.
I have a few more groups to add: Climate Reality Project; Roots & Shoots (the Jane Goodall Foundation's youth action program); and, Fridays for Future.
For folks in the western region of so-called Massachusetts, I've partnered with a bunch of local grassroots groups to create the Western Mass Climate Hub on Instagram (@western.mass.climate), where we share upcoming events, calls to action, and inspiring stories from a variety of local groups. I would greatly appreciate it if you could please give us a follow!
Thank you very much for those wonderful additions, Amanda, and for reading my series. Your climate hub is a fantastic idea! So many people want to get involved and don't know where to start. That will be a huge help.
Read NATURE’s BEST HOPE by Douglas Tallamy… start in our own yards!
Thank you very much for the book recommendation. I'm trying to rewild my yard (it's going very slowly...). This would be a big help. https://www.workman.com/products/natures-best-hope/hardback

Thank you very much for the addition! https://www.greenamerica.org/
Protect Our Winters are doing great things in Europe too. Check out their actions by country too!
Thank you very much for the info. That is good news. I'll update the post and add the European site https://protectourwinters.eu/
hi, thanks alot for doing this work Anne Marie.
I'd like to join a local group (Berkeley) but am struggling to find one that seems active & a good fit.
any word of mouth advice from folks here for a good group in berkeley (not limited to students)?
thanks alot!
My pleasure! 350 Bay Area (https://350bayarea.org/) and Extinction Rebellion (https://extinctionrebellionsfbay.org/) have Bay Area groups but they aren't centered in Berkeley. The Ecology Center in Berkeley might be a great place to start for something more local (https://ecologycenter.org/about/). I hope that helps!
Nature Conservancy of Canada! Saving land/shoreline/forests for nature and humans to enjoy in perpetuity.
Thank you also for this addition! https://natureconservancy.ca/en/

Yay! Thank you for doing that and for letting us know. Hearing about people's actions is very motivating.

Wow, thank you for all of your involvement! I think working at the local level is more effective than trying to move things at the federal level.
Recommend Acterra: Action for a Healthy Planet, Elders Climate Action, and Mothers Out Front!
